Basically a coach is someone that has a lot of wisdom and experience in a specialized area. Their job is to get a person to perform at the highest level possible. We need coaches to develop. Our interpretation of our performance is skewed. We have the handicap of performing and evaluating at the same time.

In most cases you have to ask to be coached. As a rule people don’t step into that role without being invited. A person who does that is usually just a critic and has little impact on bettering your ability. A children’s ministry coordinator, a lead teacher, or a person with a background in children education are all people you could ask to coach you. Be aware it can be every difficult to be both a close friend or a spouse and a coach.

By recruiting someone to help assess how you’re teaching, you will be enlightened as to your strengths and weaknesses. That is the beginning. A coach then gives instruction on how to build on strengths and compensate for weaknesses. Next is the challenge of modifying our actions to get a better end result. You must be willing to change and here in lies the reason for having a coach. Coaches stop coaching when they are not initiating positive change to a person’s performance.

Take the initiative to get a coach. Commit to following thought with their recommendations. Improve your effectiveness to reach this next generation for Jesus Christ.
